I avoided jewellery for years because I could never work out what I was meant to be doing with it. I'd put on three things at once, feel like a wind chime, and take two of them straight back off. What changed was realising the problem was never the jewellery, it was me wearing all of it at the same time.
The main thing I've learned is that it needs room to actually be seen, so busy prints, heavy collars, scarves, anything already doing a lot near your neck or wrists will drown out a necklace or a bracelet before anyone's had a chance to notice it. A chunky knit will swallow a delicate chain whole, and a statement earring next to a statement collar just becomes noise. Let one thing lead and keep the rest quiet around it. On the honest limits, cheap metal plating is the one to watch, because it reacts with skin, perfume and hand cream in ways that leave a green tinge or a dull patina within a few wears, and no amount of polishing fully undoes that. Thin chains catch on jumpers and buggy straps and open themselves without you noticing until it's gone. Rings with raised settings snag on tights, hair and anything you're trying to carry with both hands, and bangles that are a touch too loose will announce every single thing you do all day, which is charming for about ten minutes and then it isn't. None of that makes a piece pointless, it just means some things are for sitting still in and others are for getting on with your day in, and it's worth knowing which is which before you buy. As for when it earns its place, fine jewellery with real weight and good clasps is lovely for evenings, when you're not lifting anything heavier than a glass, and it sits against the collarbone the way it's supposed to instead of sliding about. Smaller studs, slim rings and bracelets with a bit of give are the ones that actually survive a full working day, school pickups, the lot, through autumn and winter especially, when sleeves cover more of it anyway and a good pair of earrings is doing most of the visible work under a coat.
What makes a good piece a genuine pleasure, rather than just a nice photo in a box, is the clasp. A bracelet or necklace you can do up yourself, one handed, without asking anyone to help, gets worn constantly. The ones with a fiddly lobster clasp at the back end up in a drawer, however pretty they looked on first try.
