The first thing I check on a gold dress is how the shade behaves under normal light, not shop lighting. Hold it near a window and you'll see straight away whether it's a warm, buttery gold or something closer to bronze or brass. That matters more than the cut, because the wrong undertone can sit oddly against your skin and make you look washed out rather than lit up, which is the entire point of wearing gold in the first place.
Fit is where a lot of gold dresses go wrong, because the fabrics tend to be slippery satins or metallic knits that cling to everything, including things you didn't plan on showing off. Go a size up if you're between sizes, since these fabrics rarely have the forgiveness of cotton or a thicker jersey, and check the back and hips in a mirror, not just the front, because that's where pulling shows first. Bias cut styles are kinder if your shape changes through the month, but they need a slip underneath or the static will have the skirt clinging to your tights within the hour. Watch the shoulders and straps too, metallic fabric stretches differently to how it was cut, so a dress that fits perfectly in the shop can loosen at the neckline by the end of a long evening. This is not a dress for a cold outdoor wedding or a day that involves a lot of walking in heels across gravel, the fabric picks up creases and snags easily, and anything with a lot of shine shows every mark. It also isn't built for layering well, a jacket over gold satin often looks like an afterthought rather than a finish, so if the weather's turning, think about where you'll actually be warm rather than forcing a coat on top.
Where gold earns its place is anywhere you want to look like you made an effort without looking like you tried too hard, a winter party, an anniversary dinner, anything after dark really, because gold reads better under warm artificial light than it does at a daytime do. For ease, I'd steer towards antique or muted gold over anything too bright and coin like, it photographs better and doesn't scream for attention the way a very yellow, high shine gold can. Matte or softly brushed metallics are the easiest to wear more than once without people clocking the repeat, and they hide static cling and small creases far better than the glossy versions.
This is the dress for anyone who wants one reliable thing to wear when the invite says dress up and they can't face deciding from scratch.
