The first time I reached for a mesh dress on purpose, rather than being talked into one, was for a leaving do that had moved from the office to a bar with actual lighting by nine o'clock. I wanted something that photographed well under that kind of low gold light but still felt like me and not a costume. That's the thing mesh does that plain jersey or satin can't, it catches light in a way that makes you look like you've made an effort without the effort showing.
It suits the nights where there's a bit of drama expected but no strict dress code to decode, a birthday in a bar, a party where people start dancing around half eleven, a date you've decided to take seriously. It works through spring into party season and feels wrong in deep midwinter unless there's a coat involved, mesh over bare arms in January is a choice I've made and regretted on a freezing pavement waiting for a taxi that never came. If you've got none and want to start somewhere, go for a long sleeved version in black with a proper lining underneath, not the kind where the lining is an afterthought that bunches at the hip. The long sleeves mean you can wear it somewhere with air conditioning without turning blue, and the lining means you're not accidentally doing more for the room than you intended.
Cheap mesh pills within a few wears, I had one that looked like it had a light dusting of fluff after one night out and one wash, caught on every zip and bag strap it met, and started looking tired under exactly the kind of lighting it was meant to shine in. A better one holds its weave, doesn't snag the second a sequin bag brushes past it, and actually improves slightly with wear because the fabric relaxes without losing shape. Hand wash it, always, and let it dry flat rather than hanging it, because a hanger will stretch the shoulders into points within a month and no amount of steaming fixes that. Keep it away from rough jewellery and rings when you're getting it on and off, that's where most of the small tears start.
Underneath, you need to think about it properly rather than hoping for the best, a slip dress in a similar tone or proper shapewear with the right coverage, because what shows through is the whole point and also the whole risk. On top, a plain blazer takes it from party into something you could wear to a work thing that runs into drinks after. With flat boots and a denim jacket it stops being an event dress entirely and turns into something you'd wear on a Saturday without thinking twice.
