Peach Dresses

Peach Dresses

Home › Dresses › Peach Dresses

The first peach dress I owned cost about fifteen pounds from a shop that's since closed down, and it taught me that peach is not one colour, it's about forty, and the one on the hanger is rarely the one you end up wearing out the house.

Once you've got a decent peach dress, it does more lifting in an ordinary wardrobe than you'd expect from something that colour. Denim works with it better than almost anything else I own, a jacket thrown over the top stops it looking too sweet, and gold jewellery sits on peach the way it never quite does on white or black. Nude or tan shoes keep the whole thing looking put together rather than themed, and a cardigan in a deeper rust or brown in cooler months means you're not limited to wearing it only when it's warm enough to go bare armed. I've worn the same peach shift with trainers for a daytime thing and with heels and a different bag for the evening, and nobody clocked it was the same dress because the styling did all the changing.

Before you buy, hold the fabric up to a window if you can, or at least to the shop lighting, because peach is a pale colour and cheap fabric in pale colours is where you find out exactly how much lining you're getting, which is sometimes none at all. Check the inside of the garment for a proper seam finish rather than a raw edge that'll fray in the wash, and look at the stitching around the bust and waist specifically, because that's where a badly made dress in a light colour shows every pull and pucker under normal daylight, not just shop lighting designed to flatter everything. On fit, peach forgives nothing, it's not a colour that hides a size that's slightly too small the way navy or black will, so I'd go a size up if you're between two, especially in anything with stretch, because snug peach reads as too small even when it technically isn't. Watch for fabric that clings in a way that shows every seam of your underwear, and for peach that goes slightly orange or slightly pink against your own skin tone once you're out of the shop and into actual daylight, because the two are not interchangeable and only one of them will suit you.

The mistake I'd steer you away from is buying it under shop lighting without checking it anywhere else, because peach changes more under different light than any other colour I own, and the dress that looked perfect under those warm bulbs can look like a completely different, much less flattering shade the second you step outside.
