The strap snapping on a packed bus, one hand full of shopping, the other trying to keep the bag from sliding off your shoulder and into someone's lap, is the moment you realise a fixed strap bag was never built for your actual life. An adjustable strap bag fixes that in about four seconds. Shorten it for a night out with just your card and keys rattling around, lengthen it to cross your body for the school run or the supermarket, and it stops being a decision you have to think about every time you leave the house.
The difference between a good one and a bad one shows up fast, usually within a fortnight. Cheap versions have a slider that creeps down an inch every time you sit, so you end up hitching the strap back up all day like it's a job you didn't apply for. A well made bag has a slider or buckle with enough grip to hold its length under actual weight, proper stitching where the strap meets the body rather than a single rivet taking all the strain, and leather or a thick coated canvas that doesn't crease into permanent folds within a month. Check the hardware too. Cheap metal goes a dull brassy colour after a few damp mornings, good hardware keeps its finish through a whole winter of rain.
Stick to colours that don't ask anything of you. Black, tan and a soft grey will go under a coat, over a dress, with trainers or boots, without ever becoming the thing you're thinking about in an outfit. A rich burgundy or a deep green earns a place too, mostly because it does the same job as black but looks less like you gave up deciding. White and pale colours look lovely for about three wears, then show every bit of pen ink and bus pole grime, so I'd save those for fairer weather and a bag you're prepared to baby a bit.
It pairs with almost everything already hanging in your wardrobe, which is really the point of the adjustable strap in the first place. Cross body and short over a coat in winter, longer and slouched on the shoulder with a summer dress, shortened right up for evenings when you want it tucked under your arm. If you're starting with nothing, go for a mid sized one in tan or black with a strap that adjusts through a good range, not just two notches that only suit two outfits.
I've had cheaper bags outlast expensive ones purely because the strap mechanism was sound, and that's the bit nobody checks in the shop mirror.
